The following house description information provided by the HomeStead Real Estate Co.
The JOSEPH HALL COTTAGE was constructed by Stratton Ware for his brother-in-law Joseph Hall. This home has only had three owners.
Victorian Home for sale: Interesting House Details
This example of Carpenter Gothic was built circa 1868. The front façade presents akroteria on the tops of the three gables accompanied by lacier trim in the verge boards. The lace trim approach was extended to the front porch, whose lace/vine supporting structure is unique in Cape May. The porch was totally restored in 2003. The original tile of the foyer matches the tile in the hall. There is a stained glass entry door which matches the stained glass on the first landing. The gas hall light is original with the house’s electrification, which has been upgraded three times, including 2003.Joseph Hall had three wives, which is reflected in the evident changes to the house including the off center stair case, the removal of the south east porches and differences in interior wood work.
Functional Coal Fireplace, Other Victorian Amenities
Fireplaces could burn either gas, wood or coal. The coal fireplace in the front room is functional, with vents providing heat to the second floor. Gas baseboard heat was added in the early 70’s. At the same time the current family room was added to the house reflecting the houses use as a year round family retreat/beach home. This extension, which also provides storage beyond a normal Victorian structure, is located on the site of the original kitchen and wash porches. The original cistern is under the new foundation.Cape May's Classic Historic Heritage
In 1977, the Department of Interior’s Historic American Building Survey designated Hall Cottage as a structure “Possessing exceptional historic or architectural value” thus greatly contributing to Cape May’s eventual designation of landmark status. Hall Cottage is also the first structure to return to the Victorian tricolor scheme, for which Cape May is now known.Large lot in the Heart of Cape May
