Creating CapemayX photo slideshows on-the-Fly!

I've received nice compliments on our October feature banner photos. Thanks! Until now, we haven't figured out a way to present multiple shots simply and easily within capemayX, so people could experience a photo series. After a bit of comparison shopping online, we're going to use Flickr (for now) — an amazing photo sharing service — to help solve the problem of showing multiple photos at once. I'm sure I'm a bit late to the Flickr party, but even still, it only took a few hours to learn this fantastic resource can greatly help with the sharing, viewing and searching of photos world wide. I would highly recommend Flickr to anyone with an interest in photography or the visual arts at any level — consumer or professional.

Cove Portal Photo

cove.portal2 copy.520wide

A few people emailed me about the above photo that ran in the main banner last night and this morning, after I changed it to the current photo. I like this photo — though I'm not sure why. My theory is that anytime you frame something, no matter what is used as the frame — fingers, wood slats, photo borders, stage curtains — there's an implied story setting with all the accompanying details at stake. The frame focuses your attention (if even that focus is out of focus) and opens up the limitless possibilities of what's going on here. So maybe that's what's happening as you look through the grainy, scraped fence frame and wonder what's happening over there — at the out of focus Cove Restaurant.

Great weather for taking photos

Some amazing cloud formations have howled across the Cape May skies the last few days. The high winds and low dark clouds pressing the coastline have created sunset light that's been nothing short of spectacular and have set the stage for photos that communicate the quiet, empty side of off-season Cape May. On the beach, many of these shots express that feeling of beautiful isolation where winter feels just around the corner and even the birds work together in huddle packs to battle the cold winds and shorter days.

I'll try to post some of my favorites over the next few days starting with these three. I like the ones that showcase the heavy dark clouds as the sun works to poke through on its decent to the horizon. This first shot (click at right) had the sun at my back right as it peaked through a huge roiling cloud formation. This next shot shows that cloud same formation as the sun drops into view, and really shows the quiet beauty of the Cove Beach.

This third shot, a simple black and white, really appeals to me. At first it didn't catch my attention, but when I tweaked the contrast the clouds popped through creating a charcoal painting feel and a somewhat sad, isolated beauty. I also like the graininess, like the photo itself is made from sand.

Blue Skies | click
This shot really captures the feel of Cape May in the off-season. Cool dark puffy skies push down on an almost empty beach and you can almost hear the wind whistling through the slatted fence. The pilons appear to be holding up the heavy blue clouds. We've included a journal entry (in addition to the main banner), because the main banner image doesn't show the entire photo.
