Refreshing Cape May Mohito Recipe

mojito photo.v4.ds.jpg Here's another capemayX.com refreshing tip to help you beat the heat in Cape May.

The Mojito (moh-hee-toh) is my all time favorite summertime cocktail. Maybe it's my distant Cuban roots, but done right, they are so crisp and refreshing, you'll feel like you're strolling the streets of Havana with Hemingway, as the balmy trade winds cool you down. Can you tell I'm drinking one right now as I write this?

Cape May's Best Gazpacho at Depot

gazpacho.bowl.ds.jpg The Depot Market Cafe serves up a great bowl of Gazpacho — the best I've found in Cape May. It tastes super fresh, is seasoned just right, has perfect consistency (I never liked huge chunks of veggies in my gazpacho), and is the perfect anecdote ;0) to a hot summer day. According to seasoned Depot Chef Joe, the gazpacho recipe belongs to fellow Depot Chef veteran John-O, a man who loves his work as evident by the extra care he takes when cutting the fresh ingredients into uniform little pieces. Apparently he even de-seeds the cucumbers. 552666-414221-thumbnail.jpg
Joe and Brooke: Depot purveyors of great taste
That attention to detail pays off big as this summer classic hits all the right notes for refreshing home made taste. And at only $4.95 for a generous size bowl, that's good taste that feels good. Thanks to Joe and Jose (and Brooke) for hooking me up with the Salsa Verde side dish (Jose's Salsa Verde rules). Cape May Carriage Company: Beverly introduces the horses (short video)

The Horses have the life! click
The Cape May Carriage Company is a bona fide Cape May icon. In business since the early 1980's, we've all seen the horses clopping the Cape May streets hauling vacationer cargo and delivering would be brides and grooms to the church on time. In all the years, however, we've never personally known the horses by name (speaking for myself of course). So capemayX.com set out to introduce ourselves to Magic, Knight and the crew.

horses_19.reins.jpg In this short video story, Beverly, the charismatic owner of the company and a self described horse lover since age 10, welcomes us to her farm. She introduces a few majestic equines as they prepare for a night working the streets, and we even learned a thing or two about shoes. Knowing even a few simple details of how these beautiful animals live, their history and names, changes your perspective. The next time you see them on the streets you'll know... "Hey there's Magic!" Check the Cape May Carriage Company website for more information on booking historic tours, or for your wedding day. Maybe the next report I'll take the tour — haven't been on one yet! I'm curious if they'll mention the Longfellow House on Hughes Street.

Cape May Carriage Company Photo

Mystical reflections (click: large)
We shot the current masthead photo at the Cape May Carriage Company, on Sunset Blvd. Thanks to Beverly, the friendly and colorful owner who allowed us barn, carriage and horse access. Note the beautiful light reflections on the carriages — a natural effect that happened with no planning. In fact, we didn't even notice the glints until reviewing the shots in post production. They add quite a mystical fairly tale touch. According to Beverly, that fairy tale part is a big reason so many couples request the carriages on their wedding day.

New Cape May Artist

552666-409279-thumbnail.jpg
This photo was the inspiration for original artwork by Manchego Artiesto.
Today's main capemayX masthead featured an original painting from transient Cape May artist Manchego Artiesto. We'll be using his talents over the next months, or as long as he is available. Since we rotate the banners, in case you missed it, we've included the art and original photo in this story.

Artwork used in today's banner. (click)
This original art was modeled from a recent photo of volunteers for the Center for Community Arts, painting a mural at the West Cape May Farmers Market. It's interesting when you compare the two side by side as (click on each to open two separate windows). Some of the mural painters, for example, have big heads that have united with the sunflower images on the wall. Do I know the higher meaning at stake here? No, bBut it is interesting, to my eye, anyway. Many thanks to Manchego and his growing family of pocito sombreros. We hope to get him to create a few more painting originals before he heads home across the border (now there's an interesting story). Maybe we'll interview him.
